Title BH - General Building Mechanic

This position is located at our Bienville House Hotel.

The General Building Mechanic is primarily responsible for general maintenance and repairs in guest suites, meeting space, restaurant and common areas. Guest suites and public area entry-level preventative maintenance are included. The General Building Mechanic will also perform minor repairs. 

Essential Functions

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
•  Responsible for engineering and maintenance operations of the hotel, hotel property, restaurant and grounds.

•  Respond to engineering and maintenance concerns

•  Perform and/or monitor maintenance and preventative maintenance projects

•  Respond to all building related safety concerns

•  Maintain departmental compliance with hotel maintenance procedures

•  Support hotel departmental maintenance programs and execute daily, weekly and monthly checklists

•  Assist in the supervision of temporary maintenance associates

•  Assist management in specifying proper supplies and equipment for operations

•  Deal with guest related concerns

•  Clean and maintain pool

•  Maintain the guest rooms, public space and back of the hotel areas in good repair by performing various tasks related to a variety of trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, painting, wall covering and tiling to ensure an attractive and well-maintained hotel

•  Must possess knowledgeable of basic hand and power tools operation

•  Other duties as assigned

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform the General Building Mechanic position:

•  Previous refrigeration and air condition experience preferably in a hotel maintenance department

•  Basic understanding and knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing and carpentry concepts

•  Ability to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 5 hours)

•  Ability to perform assigned duties with attention to detail, speed, accuracy, follow-through, courtesy, cooperativeness and work with a minimum of supervision

•  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

•  Ability to effectively deal with internal associates and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy to defuse anger

•  Ability to work well under pressure of check-in/check-out of guests and handle multiple tasks at once

•  Ability to grasp, bend and stoop, push or pull heavy loads weighing up to 50 lbs. and lift and/or carry or otherwise move packages, boxes and luggage

•  Punctuality and regular and reliable attendance

•  Honesty and Integrity

Language Ability
•  Effectively communicate in English (speak, read, write) with guests, co-associates and management to their understanding

•  Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals

•  Accurately compute and manipulate mathematical calculations

Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an individual encounters while performing the essential functions of  the General Building Mechanic position:

  • Frequent exposure to work near moving mechanical parts and occasional exposure to vibration
  • Moderate noise level in work environment

Physical Demands

  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Regularly stand, walk and talk or hear

Position Status and Availability

  • Available to work a full-time, morning (AM) shift, Monday – Sunday including holidays

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and
  • At least two (2) years refrigeration and air conditioning experience
