Summary
The Carpenter/Painter is responsible for mixing, matching and applying paint to various surfaces, completing touchup and coordinating large painting projects.

Essential Functions
To perform the Carpenter/Painter position job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
•  Apply paint to surfaces including canvas, walls, floors, doors and cabinets

•  Mix, match and apply paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, and other finishes

•  Scrape, sandpaper, prime or seal surfaces prior to painting

•  Clean walls to ensure proper adherence

•  Cover surfaces with cloth or plastic to ensure protection

•  Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs

•  Fill cracks, holes and joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives

•  Erect scaffolding, movable and immovable staging and various rigging to gain access to difficult areas; moves furniture and equipment as necessary

•  Remove fixtures such as pictures, doorknobs, lamps and electric switch covers prior to painting

•  Apply several coats according to paint directions

•  Tape off areas when needed

•  Apply touchups or second coats

•  Remove paint splatters when finished

•  Clean up all equipment, including brushes and spray guns

•  Utilize spray guns for large jobs

•  Work on ladders to reach high ceilings or walls

•  Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for an individual to successfully perform the duties and responsibility of the Carpenter/Painter position:

•  Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and practices of the painting trade

•  Knowledge of methods of preparing wood, metal, glass, plaster, cement, and other materials and surfaces for painting

•  Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade

•  Ability to apply paints and other finishes by brush or air gun

•  Ability to mix and match paints

•  Ability to climb and work from scaffolding or at some distance above the ground

•  Ability to understand and execute oral and written orders without immediate supervision

•  Knowledge of methods, techniques and practices of carpentry trade

•  Knowledge of carpentry tools

•  Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade

•  Ability to make simple estimates of time and materials

•  Ability to work and read sketches and blueprints

•  Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions

•  Ability to use carpentry hand and power tools

Language Ability
•  Satisfactorily communicate in English (speak, read, write) with guests, co-associates and management to their understanding

•  Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals

•  Write routine reports and correspondence in the English language

•  Speak effectively before groups of customers and/or associates of the hotel

Math Ability
•  Accurately compute and manipulate mathematical calculations

Reasoning Ability
•  Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

•  Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Work Environment
•  Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor field environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards and all types of weather and temperature conditions

•  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate

Physical Demands
•   Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time

•  Frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties

•  Climb unusual heights on ladders

•  Lift, carry, push and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight

•  Operate assigned equipment and vehicles

•  Verbally communicate to exchange information

Position Status and Availability
•  Available to work a full-time, morning (AM) shift, Monday – Friday from 7:30a - 4:00p 

Education and Experience
•  Two (2) years of vocational training or experience in the paint trade, preferably in a hotel setting

•  Two (2) years education and/or carpentry experience preferably in a hotel setting
