General Summary

Gas Technology Institute (GTI), the nation’s leading research and development and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for a mechanical engineer to work with our Emerging Technology Program (ETP). The qualified candidate will be a member of a small team responsible for screening emerging technologies, then demonstrating the most promising energy efficient products and services in pilot projects, and finally successfully transitioning the findings into inventive measures for natural gas and electric utility clientele.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform research and analysis on emerging technologies, develop action plans to pilot promising energy efficient technologies, and execute and report project findings.
  • Interact with manufacturers, distributors, contractors, and end users to obtain information needed for the emerging technology due diligence process.
  • Lead participating manufacturers, contractors, and end users in the execution of pilots while meeting the project timeline within budget.
  • Lead/Assist in planning, design, and execution of lab and field-based emerging technology pilots, including data acquisition and analysis.
  • Ability/Interest to develop and design mechanical solutions from conceptual to prototype stage, including evaluations under lab and field environments.
  • Display ownership of and bring resolution to project level issues in a decisive and expeditious manner.
  • Be a “quick study” with new technologies and become an expert resource for individual emerging technologies that is valued by the natural gas and electric utility clientele.
  • Develop a technical understanding, grasp of the economics, and applicable market awareness for individual emerging technologies and exhibit that expertise using strong written and presentation skills.
  • Multitask in/out of the office to satisfy ETP project team and clientele needs.
  • Coordinate effectively with GTI in-house contracting, purchasing, and accounting staff.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest technology to ensure the company sees available opportunities for technical and value improvements in products and services,
  • Must be able to “think outside the box.”
Requirements

Required Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communication and detail-oriented project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of gas and electric end use technologies used in homes, businesses, and industry. Experience with combined heat and power systems (CHP) a plus
  • Proven data analysis capabilities (samples of candidate’s past data analysis will be provided to GTI upon request).
  • Ability to take project initiative with limited guidance and reach out to various industry contacts to assist with the development of high-quality deliverables (samples of candidate’s past deliverables will be provided to GTI upon request).

 

Education and Experience Preferred

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical or related Engineering discipline required with a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience and demonstrated technical acumen.
  • Prior work experience in the energy industry, familiarity with energy efficiency programs, or third-party EM&V experience preferred
  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems (DAS) used in field monitoring a plus
